Washington Villarroel, a historic Catholic University player, dies

Unfortunate news shook Universidad Católica and its fans, when it was reported that Washington Villarroel, a historic defender of the Crusaders as well as being one of the team’s great champions of the 1960s, died this Sunday.

As reported Biobio Chilehis death is due to problems derived from advanced Alzheimer’s that kept him hospitalized for a week.

“Cruzados communicates and regrets the death, at the age of 84, of Mr. Washington Villarroel Rodríguez (QEPD), former UC player and who was champion with Universidad Católica in 1961 and 1966,” they said on Twitter.

“The Chilean national team member also joined the Club at the age of 11, developing his entire professional career at Universidad Católica, becoming a man fully identified with our colors,” they indicated.

“Today we extend our condolences and wishes for comfort to his family and friends. Soon we will communicate schedules and places of the wake and burial”, they expressed.
