There was an ocean on Mars millions of years ago

Sediments from an ancient ocean on Mars could shed light on marine life forms that inhabited the planet millions of years ago.

It is not news that Mars once had water. In contrast, the Red Planet had rich lakes and rivers, according to the discoveries that Perseverance has made on the Martian surface. Because of a devastating climate changehowever, any trace of water was completely dried up.

However, the presence of water on the planet indicates that the planet also had sea. Recently, a team of researchers discovered an ancient coastline, which bordered an ocean on Mars. And what’s more: In that place, there was a “hot and humid climate,” the NASA authors write. This is what we know.

Was there sea on Mars?

A topographical study carried out by NASA’s Curiosity rover confirmed the existence of an ocean on Mars. This is the “stronger” evidence so far, according to the researchers in charge of the study. This could be the first step to discover ancient life forms on the martian surfaceexplains Benjamin Cardenas, assistant professor of geosciences at Penn State:

“It also tells us about the ancient climate and its evolution. Based on these findings, we know that there had to be a period when it was warm enough and the atmosphere was thick enough to support this amount of liquid water at the same time. Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

Using information from Curiosity, NASA researchers estimate that the ocean on Mars expanded by the northern hemisphere 3.5 billion years ago. It was at least 900 meters thick, and covered thousands of square kilometers. And what’s more: I had a «substantial sedimentary accumulation“, the authors explain.

The photograph presented by Curiosity is born from 28 other images, taken before it entered the geological slope “Greenheugh Pediment”. From the sediments that lie there, the researchers hope, they hope to find more evidence about the marine life forms that possibly inhabited the ocean on Mars.
