LOS ANGELES AND SYDNEY, October 17, 2022 – Riot Games, the game developer and distributor best known for League of Legends, today completed the acquisition of studio Wargaming Sydney. The studio, now called Riot Sydney, is a global development center with experience building next-generation game development tools and servers, world-leading titles, and some R&D projects, as well as game prototypes. new game features, add-ons and ports for consoles.

Newly formed Riot Sydney will use its considerable experience to join the ranks of Riot’s League of Legends, VALORANT, and tech teams. The studio will be a key contributor to Riot’s Development Studies organization under the leadership of Molly Mason-Boule, industry veteran and head of Riot Development Studies. Under Molly’s leadership, Riot will expand its global development focus and, over time, hope to grow the video game industry in Australia and will also continue to explore similar opportunities to bring in talented experts from experienced studios.

This is one of the largest development studios in Australia and has worked on World of Tanks, World of Warships and many other console and PC titles. The studio’s award-winning technology, Bigworld Technology, was the catalyst for becoming part of Wargaming in 2012. Prior to this, Bigworld Technology powered over 30 MMOs and online games, and also held the Guinness World Record for the largest number of online players simultaneously on an MMO server. Wargaming will retain ownership of Bigworld and will continue to use its technology for its products.
The acquisition comes 10 years after Bigworld joined Wargaming and helped the studio create some of the world’s most popular games. The studio has over 25 years of gaming experience in Australia and has proven to be one of the most innovative teams in the region and industry.
All of the studio’s development staff will join Riot Sydney, while the current publishing team will remain with Wargaming.
