Sony has in its hands one of the most complex technological devices in the world: the console . Sony not only packed its console with new hardware to improve graphics, RAM and immersion performance, but also worked on an innovative external design.

This gadget comes with a bottom bracket for players to choose whether to place it vertically or horizontally. However, in recent months, we have seen several experts warn that placing the console vertically can damage it.

Yasuhiro Ootori, vice president of Sony’s mechanical design department, who was in charge of the console assembly video, warned that the console could not be placed in any position.

“This is a very common question. From the designer’s point of view there is no difference in cooling performance between placing the PS5 vertically or horizontally. I think some people think that the heat dissipation efficiency should be higher vertically because of the chimney effect. However, in a ventilation system with a fan, the stack effect falls within the error level. It works to spec both horizontally and vertically,” he detailed.

Can my PS5 console be damaged by placing it vertically?

However, the user 86Logic (Consoles System), who has a repair shop in France, said that it is really dangerous to put the console vertically.

The PS5 uses liquid metal to cool the APU and if we put it upright, it can leak over time. “Don’t put your PS5 upright, here’s the result: the liquid moves and the freezes are there.” details the user on Twitter.

The longer the liquid passes without moving, it solidifies, which prevents good cooling. Ben Montana also warned of this problem on his social networks.
