“I wish this day had never come”: Rafael Nadal’s emotional message to Roger Federer

Roger Federer set a date for his retirement. In a letter —and a video— that he posted on his Instagram account, the legendary Swiss tennis player announced that the Laver Cup, which will take place from September 23 to 25, will be his last event. Then goodbye.

“As many of you know, the last three years have presented me with different challenges with injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked to get back fully competitive. But I also know the capabilities and limits of my body, and your recent message has been very clear,” Her Majesty wrote.

“Tennis has treated me in a more generous way than I could have ever dreamed of and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career,” he added later.

Aware of this announcement, his eternal Spanish rival, Rafael Nadal, also reacted on social networks with an emotional message:

“Dear Roger, my friend and rival.

I wish this day had never come. It is a sad day for me personally and for athletes around the world.

It has been a pleasure but also an honor and a privilege to share all these years with you, living so many incredible moments on and off the pitch.

We will have many more moments to share together in the future, there are still many things to do together, we know.

For now, I really wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your children, your family and enjoy what awaits you. I’ll see you in London at the Laver Cup.”.
