Epic Games, which teamed up with Lego to create a metaverse for kids Y responsible for Fortniteone of the most popular video games in Spain and in the rest of the world, has officially launched RealityScan, an application for iPhone that allows create 3D models using the camera of the smartphone from Apple.
The company has confirmed through an official statement that RealityScan can now be downloaded for free on devices with the iOS operating system. It is a 3D scanning application that turns photos into high-fidelity 3D models and that it has been designed to be “very easy to use, so you don’t need to have any kind of experience to get started.”
Epic Games has created the application with Capturing Reality, a developer of the company’s own photogrammetry solutions; and which in turn has worked with Quixel – creators of Megascans, the largest library of scans in the world – to develop a new tool that simplifies the process of creating CG models from 3D scans.
Ultra-realistic 3D models
The operation of the app is really simple. The user just has to download the application, link their Epic Games account and take photos of the objects you want to replicate in 3D with your iPhone or iPad so that the application itself converts it into a 3D model. When the result is to your liking, you can export your creation to Sketchfab to share with your friends.
After taking photos of an object, RealityScan does all the work for you. create a model using cloud processing. In just a few minutes, the final assembled asset can be shared on Sketchfab, where you can also sell 3D, VR and AR content. There you can also download your model and use it in Unreal Engine, Twinmotion, MetaHuman or any other post-processing tool.

The company has highlighted that the high-fidelity scans that can currently be found in Quixel’s library of Megascans were created using RealityCapture, the desktop version of this app. Thanks to this technology, all creators have the ability to create highly accurate 3D models.
But that’s not all, as Epic Games has also confirmed that once published on Sketchfab, the user account will become Sketchfab Pro for one year. In addition, the company has ensured that they have big plans for RealityScan in the future, with the implementation of more features and enhancements.

They have also confirmed that in 2023 it will launch a version for devices with the Android operating systemalthough at the moment no details or the exact date of arrival are known.
